History

The Last Word originated at the Detroit Athletic Club around 1916—equal parts gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, and lime juice. It was one of the club’s most expensive cocktails at the time and is often linked to vaudevillian Frank Fogarty, who helped spread it. After decades of obscurity, Seattle bartender Murray Stenson rediscovered the recipe in 2003 and put it on the menu at the Zig Zag Café. The bold, herbal, perfectly balanced sour quickly became a cornerstone of the craft-cocktail revival and remains one of the great equal-parts classics.
