How to make
- Chill a coupe in the freezer while you mix.
- Add 2 oz gin, ¾ oz fresh lime juice, and ¾ oz simple syrup to a shaker with ice.
- Fresh juice plus syrup is the home-bar default; Rose's cordial is the older naval shortcut if that is what you have.
- Shake hard until icy cold.
- Double-strain into the chilled coupe so no ice shards dull the lime.
- Garnish with a thin lime wheel.
History
The Gimlet is a British naval drink. After the Merchant Shipping Act of 1867 required lime juice rations, Lauchlan Rose patented a sugar-preserved cordial the same year, and officers mixed it with their gin. The name may come from surgeon Thomas Gimlette or from the gimlet tool used to bore barrels. Early printed recipes used equal parts gin and Rose's. This page uses 2 oz gin with ¾ oz each fresh lime and simple syrup so the drink stays tart instead of cordial-sweet. If Rose's is already in the pantry, equal parts with gin is the older shipboard version. Either way it is a two-or-three bottle sour you can mix without a full bar.
